I have been honoured to serve as your Mayor for the past nine years, and proud to be part of Yellowknife's 75th Anniversary celebration with all of you.

Our city is a true success story, and in the North success depends on teamwork. That is why for nine years I have focused on bringing people together to develop ideas and deliver on solutions that will help our community build on success.

Yellowknife experienced a very successful decade, and we are now embracing new opportunities to invest in responsible, sustainable and innovative development that will meet the needs of our community for generations to come.

As Canada continues to invest in new technology, new infrastructure and new opportunities in the North, we must work together to reach our potential.

Our community spirit is strong, a reflection of Yellowknife’s proud heritage, our cultural diversity, our generosity, and our amazing volunteers.

Building on our success will make Yellowknife an environmentally friendly city that cares for seniors, offers safe and smart choices for youth, and finds innovative solutions that help our businesses do better.

Success stories include:

• From 2000-2009 Yellowknife's financial outlook changed from near bankruptcy to a firm financial position with minimal property tax increases.

• Strong leadership brought a substantial increase in federal funding to Yellowknife under the Building Canada Plan and Federal Gas Tax funding.

• Working together Yellowknife has established a much closer working relationship with Yellowknives Dene, the Multiplex was finished early and on Budget, our support for Yellowknife Homelessness Coalition paved the way for Side Door Youth Centre and Bailey House and we met our Partners for Climate Protection targets five years earlier than expected.

How Will We Will Build On Success?

•By successfully advancing the Smart Growth Redevelopment Plan, Community Energy Plan, and Yellowknife Social Plan

•By playing a leadership role to establish a Northern Science and Technology Center by partnering with the Yellowknives Dene to promote a Rare Earth Minerals Processing Facility in Yellowknife

•By building a modern Indoor Soccer and Indoor Track Facility with no borrowing and no municipal tax dollars invested

•By focusing on attainable housing and infrastructure initiatives that are key to strengthening the outlook for residential development in Yellowknife

•By continuing to work together on City Beautification and Public Safety through the Get YK Clean Committee, Solid Waste Management Advisory Committee, Downtown Enhancement Committee and the Yellowknife Area Policing Advisory Committee.
